Ainsley House
An English Tudor-style home constructed in 1925 for canning king J.C. Ainsley and his wife, Alcinda, now serves as a companion to the Campbell Historical Museum across the street. The surrounding English gardens are as much a draw as the house. Current Exhibit: Accessorizing at the Ainsley House, featuring fashion accessories from the turn of the century through the early 1960s.

Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum
A sprinkling of historic buildings and houses at the New Almaden Quicksilver County Park provides a glimpse into the heyday of quicksilver mining in the South Bay. The museum proper is inside La Casa Grande, where visitors can see photographs and artifacts of mining days.

Ardenwood Historic Farm
The Patterson country estate, a working 19th-century ranch, is the centerpiece of this rural preserve just off the freeway.

Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park
This new park is notable for its grove of strange "circus trees," originally a tourist attraction in the 1940s and '50s in Santa Cruz. The park is open seasonally; check the website for opening dates.

Children's Discovery Museum
A big purple museum devoted to displays about everything from spings to bubbles for kids and wannabe kids.

Chinese Cultural Garden
A 30-foot-high bronze and marble statue of big-thinker Confucius forms the centerpiece of the Chinese Cultural Gardens inside Overfelt Gardens.

Computer History Museum
Feeling nostalgic about that Apple II? The museum contains a massive collection of artifacts, images and documents relating to the history of the computer. A permanent home at 1401 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View, is coming online in May, which means that tours may not be available after March--so, call ahead. In the meantime, the displays are housed at Moffett Field.

Cupertino Historical Society and Museum
The area's development is traced through a collection of objects, furniture, photographs and documents. A monthly lecture series called Gathering at the Crossroads highlights experts on local history.

Filoli Gardens
They don't build them like they used to. This grand country estate, constructed by William Bowers Bourn, owner of the Empire gold mine and president of the San Francisco Gas Company, weighs in at 36,000 square feet on 654 acres. The mansion displays antiques and decorative arts; the formal gardens are used for a seasonally adjusted series of horticultural classes and demonstrations.

Hakone Gardens
Visitors can experience the serenity and aesthetic balance of a traditional Japanese garden, including a bamboo park and a reproduction of a 19th-century tea merchant's home. Inside the home (which was made the old-fashioned Japanese way--no nails) is a tea museum.

Harris Lass Historic Museum
The last farm site in the city of Santa Clara. A large Italianate home, barn, summer kitchen and tank house are featured.

Hiller Aviation Museum
Atherton product Stanley Hiller Jr. pioneered the helicopter and other oddities of the air. The museum displays both vintage equipment and models for future flight. Visitors can watch work onging in the restoration shops.

History Museum of Los Gatos
Located inside the old Forbes Mill, the museum collects the artifacts of Los Gatos history. Currently, the museum is hosting an exhibit about local architecture.

History San José
A 14-acre complex of historic buildings inside Kelley Park acts as a time machine showing visitors what San Jose was like in the clapboard and picket fence era. The history park includes the Trolley Barn (with historic trolleys and streetcars under restoration), a turn-of-the-century ice cream parlor, a print shop, an early gas station, the circa 1888 Ng Shing Gung, a Chinese-American community center, and the Portuguese Historical Museum and the Hellenic Heritage Museum. Iron Man Museum
In 1856, Joshua Hendy started his Iron Works in San Francisco to provide equipment for gold mining. After the 1906 earthquake, the works moved to Sunnyvale, eventually to be bought by Westinghouse. The museum contains displays about the wide range of products (including gates and valves for Hoover and Grand Coulee dams) produced by the Iron Works. Tours only; phone for details.

Japanese Friendship Garden
Take some time to relax in a Japanese garden modeled after Korakuen Park in Okayama. The koi are large enough already, but they won't turn down a handful of fish pellets from the coin-operated dispensers at the edge of their pond.

Lace Museum

Los Altos History Museum
The museum includes the J. Gilbert Smith House, an old-time farmhouse with displays of the valley's agricultural past. Stop a moment and wonder at the genuine apricot orchard, a reminder of when this area was devoted to fruit, not chips. Current Exhibit: Toys and Pastimes, a display of 20th-century playthings. Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies
In addition to a marvelous collection of books by and about the author of The Grapes of Wrath, the center also displays letters, manuscripts, artwork and other memorabilia about Steinbeck. The museum will be moving in May to its permanent home in the new joint city/university library, with an official reopening scheduled for August.

Museum of American Heritage

Peralta Adobe and Fallon House Historic Site
San Jose's Spanish and Mexican heritage are on display at the adobe, built in the late 18th century. The Fallon House, from 1855, showcases Victorian architecture and décor.

Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum
Step back in time, way back in time. The museum re-creates the tombs of the Pharoahs and contains an extensive collection of Egyptian artifacts, from scarabs to funeral urns. Also look for the current exhibit (ends April 30) about the history of the Rosicrucians, who are celebrating 75 years in San Jose. Ends Apr 30.

South Bay Railroad Historical Society Museum
The old Santa Clara Depot, circa the 1860s, has been converted into a monument to rail transportation. The collection encompasses signal lights, lanterns, track-control machines, an operational wigwag sign and some fascinating vintage railroad right-of-way maps. A library of train reference books and a large operating layout of HO and N-scale model trains rounds out the experience. Special Event: The Spring 2003 Model Train Show and Open House takes place April 5-6 and 12-13, 10am-5pm; $1/$3.50.
