Remembering 'Rockin' Rob' Memorial show a huge success By Sarah Quelland IT'S A SHAME it took the passing of "Rockin' Rob" Dapello to get so many bands and local music supporters together for a common cause. Last Sunday (March 18), a remarkable cross-section of area bands congregated at the Cactus Club to raise money to put out a CD of music Dapello recorded during his life. From the bizarre performance art of BB Gun Suicide (which one bystander described as post-apocalyptic recycled metal) to the bluesy Pimp Sticks (which features Dave Baisa, Joey Meyers and Mike Bellardes) to the straightforward rock & roll of the Secrets (which includes Damien Zubrod and Sean Packer), there was real variety in the music. The all-day event also brought forth many exciting, if only temporary, reunions, including metal outfit True to Form, the wacky Not Hot bunch and San Jose punk-rock band Los Olvidados, which broke up in 1986 and was reportedly Dapello's favorite local band. The video message from Dapello's brother, Lars Frederiksen (of Rancid and Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards), and his friend Gordy Carbone and footage of Dapello that was shown on TV screens throughout the club between Dapello's band Uncle Lucifer's and Los Olvidados' sets brought tears to many eyes. And everywhere you looked, people were covered in stickers and pins promising to "Never Forget Rockin' Rob" and wearing the black memorial T-shirts with Dapello's picture on the front. With $560 paid, the day netted $3,500. That money will be used to release Dapello's music. Thursday (March 22), Triple Seven hosts the fourth and last installment of its successful monthly Naughty Nite Out showcases at the Usual. Apparently the funky local hip-hop/rock outfit is heading off to Philadelphia to record a full-length album with producer Phil Nicolo of the Butcher Brothers. After recording a three-song demo with Stone Temple Pilots' Eric Kretz and a five-song demo with Brian Joseph Dobbs, Bay Area rock band ManMade God is signing on with Rick Rubin's American Recordings, home to artists like Slayer, System of a Down and Chris Rock. ManMade God plans to start recording its debut in April. Some dates for this year's OzzFest have been announced. The closest the metal tour gets to the South Bay so far is the June 27 date at the Sacramento Valley Amphitheater, but a South Bay date will likely be announced soon. This year's lineup includes Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson, Papa Roach, Slipknot, Linkin Park and Crazy Town on the main stage, and Disturbed, Mudvayne, Cold, Taproot, Systematic, the Union Underground, Drowning Pool, Nonpoint, American Head Charge, Beautiful Creatures, Hatebreed, Black Label Society and Pure Rubbish on the second stage. The Vans Warped Tour comes to San Francisco on June 30 with the Rollins Band, the Misfits, Kool Keith, Weezer, 311, Rancid, Pennywise, Alien Ant Farm, the Vandals, Fenix TX, Good Charlotte, Less Than Jake, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, AFI, the Ataris, Big Wig, Distillers, Dub Pistols, Esham, Fear, Grand Theft Audio, Guttermouth, H20, Jepetto, the Julianna Theory, Kill Your Idols, Madcap, Midtown, Morgan Heritage, New Found Glory, No Motiv, River City Rebels, Saves the Day, Sugarcult and Userfriendly. KKUP music director and SJSU professor Brad Stone won the 2001 Gavin Seminar's "Jazz Programmer of the Year, Markets 26+" award.
