Long-time live-music and dance-night venue set to re-emerge as supper club
By Sarah Quelland
In its 11-year-run as a night club, the Edge in Palo Alto became a staple of the Bay Area's nightlife and a routine stop on smaller national tours. Many will be saddened to learn that that era is quickly drawing to a close. After April 29, the Edge will shut its doors for a complete overhaul.
The all-ages venue brought in acts like Marilyn Manson, Korn and Deftones--and plenty of other cutting-edge artists on their way up--providing music junkies with the opportunity to see their favorite musicians in an intimate setting.
The Edge also played an important role for local bands. After getting their feet wet in smaller clubs, the honor of opening at the Edge was a signal that they'd finally arrived--at least in local circles. In addition to bringing in the regular tours, the Edge scored many times (thanks to talent buyer Jimmy Arceneaux), with secret shows by the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt and Nine Inch Nails. A dance club as well as a concert venue, the Edge provided one of the only 18+ dance spaces in the area and offered frequent youth nights for ages 14-18 only.
Owner Jacek Rosicki sounds very excited about the forthcoming changes to the club, saying it will be unrecognizable once all the work is completed. Aiming for a mid-summer reopening, the Edge will open under a new, as-of-yet undisclosed name as a chi-chi supperclub boasting elegant dining and adult contemporary music.
According to Rosicki, the new incarnation will be primarily a patio and restaurant that seats 800 and offers lunch and dinner. It will also be available for banquets, weddings and other receptions. He describes the new space as similar to his other club, downtown San Jose's Agenda Lounge, only much larger.
Until then, the doors to the Edge remain open, and it's business as usual. Papa Roach will headline the last live show when it celebrates the release of its DreamWorks Records debut on April 27 with Taproot, Salmon and other guests. Tuesday, Friday and Saturday dance nights remain intact, and youth nights run April 16, 19, 23 and 26. A blow-out farewell extravaganza is in the works and will be held on April 29. It should be quite a party, albeit a bittersweet one. We'll have details on the closing celebrations as soon as they come in.
