San Jose's Cactus Club hosted Stikmon benefit and more over busy weekend

By Sarah Quelland

THE CACTUS CLUB was definitely the place to be over the weekend. Last Friday (April 21), Stikmon held his annual Big Ass International benefit, this time billed as a 420 Fest. He pulled in a whopping seven bands for the event, with Reaction 31, Drift, Movement, Dick, Alien Ant Farm, Shortie and True to Form participating. The club nearly sold out as locals turned up in support of the diverse bill with bands from San Jose, Sacramento and other California cities. Saturday (April 22), Insolence held its CD-release party with Luxt, Tom Foolery and others performing. The club was absolutely packed as Insolence performed on its home turf to celebrate its latest effort, Poisonous Philosophy, which should be in stores now. Metal celebrities were spotted in the crowd, including Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph and the drummer for Machine Head. Sacramento-based neo-industrial Luxt has also been hitting the club circuit to promote its new album, Chromasex Monkeydrive.

Last Friday (April 21), Spitkiss put on a show at the YWCA in Palo Alto, an all-ages venue where punk and metal bands perform on a regular basis. The band has invested in some lasers, lights and fog-making equipment, so its live show is even more eye-catching and intense. With two new songs ("Planet Earth" and "Disenchanted") and more on the way, Spitkiss has demonstrated a real musical growth and vision over the last few months and is delving even further into the realm of heavy electronic music.

Due to high demand, the Slipknot show got moved to the Warfield. It will be held this Sunday (April 30) with One Minute Silence and Mudvayne. Tickets are $26.50. Doors are at 7pm, and the concert starts at 8pm.

Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle are coming to the Cow Palace in San Francisco on June 7. ... Creed finally made good on its promise to return to this area after it canceled last year. The band will perform at the SJSU Event Center on June 15 with Sevendust. ... Metallica contributed a new song titled "I Disappear" to the upcoming Mission: Impossible 2 soundtrack, which is due out May 9. Other songs on the album include Limp Bizkit's "Take a Look Around (M:I-2 Theme)," the Foo Fighters/Brian May cover of Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar," Rob Zombie's "Scum of the Earth," Tori Amos' "Carnival," Butthole Surfers' "They Came In," Chris Cornell's reworked "Mission 2000" and Godsmack's "Going Down." New recruits contributing to the album include the Pimps, Diffuser, Apartment 26, Uncle Kracker, Powderfinger and Tinfed. Hans Zimmer's score for the picture will also be released.

This is it. The last live rock show will be held at the Edge tonight (April 27; see story on page 34) with Papa Roach, Taproot, Salmon and dredg. A small farewell to the Edge party will be held Sunday (April 29) as well. Papa Roach's DreamWorks debut, Infest, came out last Tuesday (April 25). For a limited time and in selected stores, the album will sell for $9.99-$10.99 and comes with a free 20-minute documentary full of interviews as well as live and studio footage of the band. Titled Let the Madness Begin ... (A Video Document), the video includes the band's first official single, "Last Resort," which is already airing on MTV. Look for it on MTV's Buzz Bin. ... Primus is holding a special fan appreciation show. Tickets are not available for purchase and can only be won by listening to LIVE 105. The date and location appear to be a poorly kept secret. The show has been listed as taking place at the Fillmore this Saturday (April 29).
