A Damn Fine Cup of Coffee: Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak bond over some of San Francisco's finest in Alfred Hitchcock's 'Vertigo.'

Cinema Santana

New shopping village hosts Picnic, Popcorn and Picture Show series of outdoor movies

THE NEWLY built Santana Row live/work/shop development, which to these unarchitecturally trained eyes looks pretty much like a movie set as is, furthers the cinematic connection with a summer-long free outdoor movie series (May 14-Sept. 24). While nothing will replace the Winchester Drive-In, dead and buried some three miles down the street, this is a nice gesture toward rebuilding San Jose's once-thriving outdoor movie-watching scene.

The 20-week series includes a well-chosen mix of classics and recent popular favorites. The series kicks off May 14 with Some Like It Hot, Billy Wilder's famed 1959 comedy with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and a never funnier Marilyn Monroe. The rest of the program includes plenty of Hitchcock (his melancholy masterpiece Vertigo, June 4; To Catch a Thief, July 2; Rear Window, Aug. 6; and North by Northwest, Sept. 3); another by Billy Wilder (Double Indemnity, Sept. 17); Casablanca, May 21; The Matrix, May 28; Sixteen Candles, June 11; Shakespeare in Love, June 18; The Magnificent Seven, June 25; and--for those with a high tolerance of meteors and Liv Tyler--a revival of Armageddon, Aug. 27. The films all start when darkness falls, around 8:30pm or so.

Picnic, Popcorn & Picture Show runs every Wednesday at sundown, May 14-Sept. 24, at Park Valencia, Santana Row, off Olin Avenue at Winchester Boulevard. Rain cancels. Free. Check www.santanarow.com or call 408.551.4600 for details.
