Delux at Moorpark Hotel
By Todd Inoue
THE VALENCIA and the De Anza aren't the only hotels to have the sophisticated nightspot atmosphere thing on lock. Just down the street, the Moorpark Hotel is quietly building a reputation as a sleek, sophisticated place to enjoy a cocktail. If you haven't been here yet, the Moorpark stuns with contemporary design and architectural touches that appeal to those sick of corporate hotels. This Thursday (May 20), the Moorpark celebrates its third anniversary and launches a weekly after-work Delux get together from 4 to 9pm.
"We're trying to get the community aware of the Moorpark," says general manager Jorge Carrasco. "Just because we're not a corporate-named hotel doesn't mean we don't have style and service." Delux serves up sexy hors d'oeuvres, signature cocktails and music. Nibble a satay skewer, sip a delicate martini, dangle your legs in the pool, bliss out on live Brazilian music and flirt outrageously among the cabanas.
The concept is a collaboration between the Moorpark and Giant Creative Services, which also puts on events like Gypsy Cinema. Carrasco says they were interested in starting a regular night that catered to the community, not just hotel guests. And they want to keep it like the Moorpark: cool, elegant and stylish. "We're not into the 'locust theory,' where a lot of people come for one night, leave the place a disaster and never come back," says Carrasco. "There are people who want to relax and have a martini. We want to create that environment."
"It's a hidden gem, undiscovered," says Giant Creative's Chris Esparza about the Moorpark. "The place has a lot more 'Manhattan poolside' look than California. It's a handsome, retro place, but we're not trying to be vintage-y. This is a place to meet friends, eat, drink and be by the water." Thursday's debut features Brazilian band Agua Na Boca and DJs spinning soul, funk, lounge. Delux will then continue every Thursday until October.
