Stitch in Time Confident Stitch assaulted the Cactus with heavy sounds last Friday By Sarah Quelland THE CACTUS CLUB mounted a good lineup last Friday (May 19) with Stitch, Movement, Drist, Dilemma and others. Stitch is really coming into its own live with a strong, confident performance to go along with its assaulting music. Apparently, the band just sealed a deal with a subsidiary of Metal Blade Records that will result in national distribution of Stitch's debut album. Movement, featuring former members of Insolence and Method 5150, also generates a furious energy live and is definitely a local band to track. Led by vocalist Kelly Dalton, Krenshaw successfully debuted its new sound last Thursday (May 18) at the Usual. The band has detoured into heavier rock & roll with several new songs and reworked versions of older material, but it's still recognizably Krenshaw (which also features R.J. Newkirk on drums, Matt Castle on guitar and bass, Ryan Landes on guitar and Jimmeh on bass and guitar). Operator: Generator supported with its loud brand of rock & roll with nods to some of the heroes of early metal. The Stumps filled in for Santa Cruz-based punk band the Lonely Kings, which had to cancel due to a last-minute emergency. The Stumps' performances are full of distorted guitars, and their influences range from Alice in Chains to U2. The Fillmore hosts the second annual Live Nude Bands concert this Saturday (May 27). The unusual benefit showcase for Bay Area bands forces participants to compete in tug-of-wars and a spelling bee for time slots. And as in a wicked game of musical chairs, the ultimate losing band's members have to doff their clothes and take the stage in the buff. This year's brave contenders include the Hi-Fives, Marginal Prophets, Storm, Essence, the Gun and Doll Show, Phoenix Thunderstone, Three Day Stubble, Polkacide and DJ Polywog. The event will be co-hosted by the ever-engaging Beth Lisick of the Beth Lisick Ordeal; proceeds benefit Bay Area charities. Tickets are $10. Doors open at 8pm; show starts at 9pm. Boss Hog, featuring Christina Martinez and her husband, Jon Spencer (of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion), performs this Friday (May 26) at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. ... The annual Mountain Aire music festival will be held this weekend (May 27-28) at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp. On Saturday, catch Phil Lesh & Friends, the Derek Trucks Band, Henry Butler, Vivendo de Pao, Radney Foster, Todd Snider, 008 and Rodleen. Sunday's lineup includes Ani DiFranco, Spearhead, Vinyl, Speakeasy and David Garza. Camping is available from Friday at 2pm until Monday at noon. Dogs are not allowed. Tickets are $39.50 for a one-day pass/$75 for a two-day pass and are available through Ticketmaster. Weekend camping passes are $15 per person with a two-day ticket. Special performances by Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and Galactic will be held exclusively for campers. Tombstone Pizza is holding a Warped Tour road-trip contest. Teens ages 15-19 demonstrate that they are "Warped Tour Warriors" and extreme-pizza lovers via videotape, website, audiocassette, essay or photographs with captions.
