Beavers Bar & Grill
By Jim Harrington
I THOUGHT it was a joke the first time someone told me there was a place called "Beavers" on Lincoln Avenue in Willow Glen. I didn't fully believe it until I saw the sign announcing the name in bold capital letters above the entrance to what was once the Glen restaurant. I'm no prude but the not-so-subtle reference to anything but a furry rodent was a bit disturbing.
But I'm buying it, and I'm also buying themed bar appetizers like the Beaver Dip (spinach and artichoke) and the Beaver Spread (barbecued buffalo wings and other goodies). If that's not enough innuendo for you, quench your thirst with a Buttery Beaver or Captain Beaver cocktail. Willow Glen "gangstas" will undoubtedly want to try the Beavers Gin and Juice.
The bar offers a happy hour from 4 to 7pm on weeknights as well as several promotions. On Mondays, folks get their first hour of pool for free on one of the nine tables. There are $2 Tuesdays, shot specials on Wednesdays, Ladies' Night on Thursdays with $3 cosmos and martinis, and live music performed by local rock acts on Fridays and Saturdays.
A huge-screen TV broadcasts sports events, and fans can amuse themselves with video golf and darts. The bar has an excellent selection of beers on tap, including the house's own Beaver Lager. Taking its cue from Hooters, the granddaddy of all innuendo-laced restaurants, the staff is tastefully dressed in Beavers T-shirts and sweatpants that read "Beavers" across the butts. Staff members admit that they get lots of questions about the name and try to play down the sexual reference, but that's really hard to do given the food, drink names and the slogan: "Something is always up at Beavers Bar and Grill."
