Gecko Grill

855 N. 13th St., San Jose; 408.971.1826

By Todd Inoue

Hours: Mon-Fri 11am-9pm, Sat-Sun 10am-9pm

Signature Drink: Horny Gecko (Long Island iced tea remixed Gecko style)

Décor: Red walls with colorful flourishes

LOCATED JUST off of 13th and Hedding, Gecko Grill resembles a roadhouse diner with its gated patio, tile roof and parking spots a dusty 10 feet away from the front door. Step inside and catapult into a 21st century taqueria with bright orange and red hues, televisions and sexy bar stools and tables. The bar is a Home Depot delight made of lacquered wood and corrugated aluminum paneling. The premium well is a 3-D contraption of mirrors and bottles making the whole package bright and space age. Unlike other Mexican restaurants, this one is geared for good times as well as good food with an adventurous bar menu, and a tad more upscale dining options with items like rosemary chicken salad, tomatillo chicken soft tacos and shrimp a la diabla. The service can be uneven--15 minutes is a long time to wait for a shrimp cocktail on a recent trip--but well worth it you have no particular place to go.
