Bring on the Love Papa Roach put on an explosive performance at BFD days before the release of 'lovehatetragedy' By Sarah Quelland EVERYBODY JUST TREAT EACH OTHER cool, and we're gonna have a good time," Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix told the audience while encouraging them to flout the rules of reserved seating and rush to the front of the stage. Papa Roach went on to steal the show at BFD, held last Friday (June 14) at Shoreline Amphitheatre. For the most part, this year's poorly attended concert was full of lukewarm performances and very little energy. But serving as main support for P.O.D., Papa Roach made the whole day worthwhile with an explosive set that kicked off with familiar songs "Dead Cell" and "Broken Home." Fame, fortune and a triple-platinum album don't seem to have changed the Vacaville group much. Papa Roach has sharpened its big-rock presentation, but Shaddix is still the combustible ADD frontman he's always been, repeatedly jumping into the crowd, handing his mic off to fans in the front and conducting the rabid audience like his own personal orchestra. A sea of fists pumped from the front of the stage to the back of the lawn at his command. During "Blood Brothers," when he announced, "I wanna see a circle pit up on the lawn; I wanna see you guys fuckin' lose it," a huge pit instantly started swirling and tendrils of smoke drifted up, likely from kids lighting their shirts on fire. The band balanced material from Infest with new songs from lovehatetragedy, an album that would hit stores only days later, on June 18. Shaddix told the crowd, "If you can't afford that shit, steal it. That's my advice." Throughout the impressive new songs--which included "M-80 (Explosive Energy Movement)," "Life Is a Bullet," "Singular Indestructible Droid," "Code of Energy" and the first single, "She Loves Me Not"--the audience never waned. Shaddix prefaced "Born With Nothing, Die With Everything" by saying, "This next one is a new one, but I don't give a fuck. I wanna see everybody jump." The whole amphitheater started bouncing. With the band's old stomping grounds, the Cactus Club, closing at the end of June, Shaddix acknowledged Papa Roach's roots, saying, "I'd like to take it back to the Cactus Club days right now," before the group launched into "Walking Through Barbed Wire," an old song that made the cut to the new album. The lyrics took on new meaning as he sang, "Wish I could see you for one last time / Wish I could say goodbye to you / It's hard to deal with you dying / It's time to say goodbye to you." Cooling down at the end of the band's hour-long set, Shaddix sat down on a dark stage to sing the mournful intro to the new song "Black Clouds" before the band jumped back in to segue from that into its biggest hit to date, "Last Resort." When Papa Roach exited, so did half the crowd. So many people were streaming out of Shoreline, it looked as if the show were over.
