Sin in Space Soars Santa Cruz band holds down finishing role at Streetlights CD party By Sarah Quelland LAST SATURDAY (June 16) was a great day for local music as the Cactus Club hosted contrasting afternoon and evening shows. Santa Cruz's Frank Black-inspired Sin in Space made its San Jose debut at the Streetlight Records Support Your Local Musician CD-release party, which featured the What Four? and other bands that contributed to the disc. Sin in Space played tracks from its recently released Asteroid Band CD, including "Hellfire" (which was also on the Streetlight compilation) and new songs titled "Kill Indie," "Fight" and "Galaxia." Despite his fairly casual appearance in faded blue jeans and a worn T-shirt that draped easily over his lean frame, frontman Cassidy Meijer's sharp features hold remarkable determination and his dark eyes burn with intensity when he's performing. The four-piece band is taking a break over the summer and its last scheduled show to date is June 29 at Running Dog Studio on Front Street in Santa Cruz. The afternoon show made way for Krenshaw's heavy-duty CD-release party with Mallet, Woodshed, Reaction 31, Breach and SECURITY. The testosterone-charged lineup left little to be desired, and the place was packed with more than 400 people. Krenshaw and Reaction 31 will also be participating in Jimmy's Rubber Groove, Jimmy Arcenaux's birthday celebration. The big event will be held June 30 at the Cactus with Moodfrye, Divided, Ones and Zeros, the Chant, Jones and Arcenaux's own band Los Bastardos de Amor. A special surprise reunion is also planned for the night. Reaction 31 will also be playing July 14 at the Cactus with Shortie, Tenfold, Element of Surprise, Leisure, Downside, Numb and Funeral Diner. Trapt reportedly got signed to Atlantic Records and will be holding a signing party on June 22 at the Cactus with Soul Aggression, Utopian Pipedream, Sol Ascending and Fleshole. ... The winners of the second round of Ultravibe's Sound Off 2001 will be announced on June 27 after Kung Fu Vampire, Salmon and Duce Co. perform. The second round finals will be held July 6. All shows will take place at the Cactus. The battle continues on July 11 with Methlab Explosion, Divided and Element 8, followed by Monkey, Drain 26 and Buzzbomb Phase 4 (July 18) and Hurt, Lords of the Manor, Red Asfault and Kronic (July 25). Winners will be announced on July 25. The round finals will be held Aug. 3, grand finals Aug. 31. Live Nude Bands, featuring Zen Guerilla, the Hail Marys, Black Kali Ma, Bonfire Madigan, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Gun & Doll Show, the Pre-Teens and the PBR Street Gang, will be held Friday (June 22) at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Tickets are $12.50, doors are at 7pm and proceeds benefit the Bay Guardian Community Fund. ...
