Aural Fixation
By Sarah Quelland
DESPITE ALL THE CRAZY rumors that have been flying around since Insolence cut its European tour short, the band, according to manager Angie Cardenas, is still together with all its members intact and has a show coming up July 31 at the Cactus Club with Criminal Network and other bands. ... Smash Mouth manager Robert Hayes recently agreed to manage local hip-hop/rock outfit Triple Seven, which uses funk, R&B and soul stylings to achieve its distinctively catchy sound. For now, the band plans to focus on recording. ... Local hardcore band Down2None holds a CD-release party July 16 at the Cactus, opening for punk-funk meisters M.I.R.V. Others scheduled to perform include Swig and Lyrical Assailants. ... Sunfur also celebrates the release of its latest CD, New Skin, July 16 at Waves Smokehouse and Saloon.
Clay Wheels offers a free all-ages show July 17 with O.J.'s Bronco at 555 Washington in San Jose. ... OzzFest is coming to Shoreline Amphitheatre July 20. This year's epic metal-music festival spearheaded by Ozzy Osbourne features Black Sabbath, Rob Zombie, Deftones, Slayer, Primus, Godsmack, Static X, Fear Factory, System of a Down, Puya, Flashpoint, Slipknot and Pushmonkey. This could be Sabbath's last tour.
I've always thought the Ramones' appearance belied their catchy, dare I say poppy, brand of punk rock. Scrawny, grimy tattooed rock stars with greasy hair and black leathers that look like they haven't been cleaned in years bouncing around singing "oh no uh oh oh oh/wham bam bam bam"--you catch my drift? Regardless, this pioneer outfit has always been synonymous with punk rock (that being old-school punk rock). And to prove just how extensive their career has been, the Ramones have an epic anthology scheduled to hit stores July 20. Titled Hey, Ho, Let's Go!, the retrospective boasts two discs, 58 tracks and a 50-page book filled with all kinds of goodies for Rock 'N' Roll High School junkies.
PLAN AHEAD: The Cult, July 15 at the Warfield in San Francisco; the Skatalites, July 15 at Palookaville in Santa Cruz; Slow Gherkin, July 16 at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz; the Offspring and Lit, July 18 at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley; Velvet Alex, See Jane and Strange, July 20 at the Usual; the Red Elvises, July 21 at the Agenda Lounge; Fastball, the Goo Goo Dolls and Sugar Ray, July 21 at Shoreline Amphitheatre; Gwar, July 22 at the Edge; Orbital, the Crystal Method and Lo-Fidelity Allstars, July 23 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco; True to Form and Spitkiss, July 24 at the Cactus Club.
