Shock Therapy Artists play benefit for El Salvador, India earthquake victims By Sarah Quelland THE AFTERSHOCK TOUR featuring Lauryn Hill, Marc Anthony, Luther Vandross, Anoushka Shankar, Billy Eylle and guest appearances by the Eagles' Don Felder and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers stops at the Compaq Center next Sunday (July 29). This special concert is a benefit for earthquake victims in El Salvador and India and concertgoers are asked to bring at least one can of food to be given to the Second Harvest Food Bin of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Krenshaw is participating in Metro's Music in the Park this year, opening for the Calling today (July 19). This free concert series is held at Plaza de Cesar Chavez every Thursday, 5-8:15pm through Sept. 6. Next week (July 26) Sonia Dada will perform, followed by Toots and the Maytals (Aug. 2), Jules Broussard (Aug. 9), Super Diamond (Aug. 16), Dave Meniketti and Ones and Zeros (Aug. 23), Pete Yorn (Aug. 30) and Pete Escovedo (Sept. 6). The M.L.S. Battle of the Bands continues tonight (July 19) at the Usual with Sun Burn, Emaneht, Vile Descent, Ones and Zeros and Alien Love Syndrome. Semifinalists include downside, Spun and Electromotive. The grand finals will take place on July 26 at the Usual and the winner will perform at the All-Star Game held July 28 at Spartan Stadium. An after-party will be held that night at the Usual . . . Spun will also perform July 27 at the Quarter Note in Sunnyvale with Brickhead and G9. Brickhead also has a show coming up this Sunday (July 22) at the Gaslighter Theater in Campbell. Other particularly exciting shows coming up at the Usual include female AC/DC tribute band Hell's Belles, along with Razor Babes, Gun St. Girls and the Secrets this Saturday (July 21) and Reverend Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy on Aug. 30. Fuel just launched a new night of dance hall, Latin funk, down-tempo and dub titled Mondorama. Bougie Soliterre kicked things off last Tuesday (July 17). Upcoming artists include Tomas (July 24), Polar Bear (July 31), Tom Thump (Aug. 7) and De Nada (Aug. 14). Rene Solis and the Persuaders release its latest CD this Saturday (July 21) at JJ's Blues. ... Clay Wheels releases its latest record, Born to Barge, next Thursday (July 26) at the Lido. Zen Guerilla, which has a new album coming out on Aug. 21 titled Shadows on the Sun (on SubPop Records), and Piece of Mind also perform. The schedule for the San Mateo County Fair and Floral Fiesta has been released. This year's performers include the Persuasions (Aug. 10), Brad Paisley (Aug. 11), Tower of Power and Bermudez Triangle All-Stars (Aug. 12), the World Classic Rockers (Aug. 13), Styx (Aug. 14), Brian Setzer (Aug. 15), Dennis Quaid and the Sharks (Aug. 16), Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers (Aug. 17), Starship featuring Mickey Thomas (Aug. 18) and Chubby Checker (Aug. 19).
