SunCore Blazes Summer lineup at Great American includes local bands and touring acts By Sarah Quelland LOCAL BANDS are taking over Paramount's Great America this Saturday (July 29) as part of SunCore 2000. Look for performances by Insolence, Salmon, dredg, South 85, Superchannel, 5606 and Alien Ant Farm. The event kicks off at 3pm at the Hometown Stage area and is free with park admission. Other shows coming up at Great America include "Weird Al" Yankovic (July 30), Los Lobos, Son by Four and Yeska (Aug. 6), Martina McBride (Aug. 11), Mandy Moore (Aug. 25), Mary Mary (Aug. 26), Duran Duran, the Motels and Tsar (Sept. 3), the Mexican Independence Day celebration with various Latin artists (Sept. 16) and the Joyfest Christian music festival featuring Newsboys, Supertones, SonicFlood, Clay Crosse, Aaron Benward and Nicol Smith (Oct. 7). The sixth annual Fat Fry will be held this weekend (July 29-30) at the Aptos Village Park in Santa Cruz County. This year's lineup includes the Indigo Girls, Altan, Mumbo Gumbo and Joules Graves on Saturday (July 29) and John Hiatt & the Goners, Bruce Cockburn & Band, Southern Culture on the Skids and Laurie Lewis on Sunday (July 30). OuttaLine has a show coming up this Sunday (July 30) with Absent Minded, Drain 26, the Accidentals and Ancient Astronaut. It's all-ages and will be held at the Gaslighter Theater in Campbell. OuttaLine is part of a local movement that continues to push for a free skatepark in San Jose and is asking those of a similar mind to visit http://sanjose.evansmcdonough.com/?lang=E and fill out the survey form in a responsible manner. There's another skatepark rally in the works. The ESPN X Games are holding a grass-roots skateboarding demonstration this Saturday (July 29), noon-4pm on Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place on Polk Street between McAllister and Grove streets in San Francisco. The event, in association with the San Francisco Skatepark Coalition, will feature X Games skateboarders, bicycle stunt riders and local pros, as well as live DJ music and giveaways. The main X Games event will be held Aug. 17-22 at Pier 30/32 in San Francisco. The Cocodrie in San Francisco is going out of business. Its grand finale will be held this Saturday and Sunday (July 29-30). The afternoon punk show starts Saturday at noon and features Lowlife, Kill the Messenger, Mad at Sam, Blatant Ridicule, Built, Flush, Last Man Out and others. Then, at 7pm, the club switches gears with performances by rock bands American Heartbreak, Petrol, Romeo's Dead, Simon Stinger, Sparrows Point and others. On Sunday, Desert City Soundtrack, Rum Diary, Ruby Mar, Polaris Mine, Enclave and others start at 11am. The weekend wraps up with a 5pm show starring Agent Orange, Caradura, Divit, Enemy You, Green Means Go, Luckie Strike, Pollen, Smartbomb, Teen Idols, the Wunder Years and others. It sounds like an N.W.A. reunion is in the works. Dr. Dre--who's returning to the San Jose Arena Aug. 13 with Snoop Dogg--is starting the buzz of a 2001 album and tour featuring himself, Ice Cube and MC Ren, with Snoop Dogg as a substitute for the late Eazy-E. ... Tickets are on sale for another one of Les Claypool's projects. Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade (featuring members of Ratdog and Primus) will perform at the Fillmore Aug. 19 and at Palookaville Aug. 28. ... Ticketmaster is offering a special $15 discount if you buy lawn tickets for both the Who show (Aug. 21) and the Jimmy Page With the Black Crowes show (Aug. 22) at Shoreline Amphitheatre. The Cult was just added to the Jimmy Page show.
