Sounding Off Neurosis handpicks the bands for the Neurot Sound Series in San Francisco By Sarah Quelland BELOVED BAY AREA BAND Neurosis is helping instigate the Beyond the Pale concert event to be held Aug. 16-19 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. This first installment of the Neurot Sound Series will feature 14 bands handpicked by the members of Neurosis, and the whole thing will be broadcast live on KFJC-FM (89.7). The festival includes performances by Michael Gira (Angels of Light/Swans), Amber Asylum, Steve Von Till and Scott Kelly on Aug. 16; Shellac, Neurosis, Zeni Geva and Oxbow on Aug. 17; Shellac, Neurosis, Isis and Thrones on Aug. 18; and Zoviet France, Tribes of Neurot, Tarentel and KK Null on Aug. 19. Another huge four-day festival takes place at the same time (Aug. 16-19). Nadine's Wild Weekend, a showcase of local and regional music that boasts 100 bands in 20 clubs, will be held at venues across San Francisco. The opening bash well be held Thursday at the Fillmore with Spike 1000, the KGB, Vegas de Milo and the Moss Brothers. Some South Bay bands will participate in the Wild Weekend. Among them: Brickhead (Aug. 17 at 330 Ritch, 330 Ritch St.), Hope Child (Aug. 17 at Hotel Utah, 500 Fourth St.) and Triple Seven (Aug. 17 at Paradise Lounge, 308 11th St.). Zero magazine will present three shows at the Pound (Pier 96). On Aug. 17, starting at 9pm, American Heartbreak, the Oozies, the Sick and the Reducers-SF perform and on Aug. 18 starting at 1pm, the Locals, the Willknots, UVR, Fetish, Stunt Monkey, Solemite, Divit and others play a day show, while Venus Bleeding, Flood, Marginal Prophets, Storm Inc., Luxt and others put on an evening show that starts at 9pm. A portion of proceeds from the whole festival will be donated to the Songs Inspired by Literature Project (SIBL), a nonprofit organization founded by Deborah Pardes that connects musicians and authors to promote reading and adult literacy. Visit www.nadineswildweekend.com for more info. The Icon Supperclub hosts a Depeche Mode after-party on Aug. 4 and is promising surprise guests. The party is free with a ticket stub from Depeche Mode's Shoreline Amphitheatre show. The Icon will also have MTV video crews shooting a commercial at next Tuesday's (Aug. 7) "$2 Tuesday" dance night. ... The Aftershock Benefit scheduled for last Sunday (July 29) at the Compaq Center and starring Lauryn Hill, Luther Vandross, Marc Anthony and others was called off apparently due to lack of corporate sponsorship. ... Triple Seven returns to San Jose with a new album, and the band is celebrating with a show at the Usual next Thursday (Aug. 9). Fighting Jacks, downside and Wreckhouse also perform. Local band Sift celebrate the release of its new CD next Friday (Aug. 10) at the Pound. Technocracy also releases a new CD and Multiply, F-Bomb and Wytebread also perform. The show is all-ages, tickets are $10 and the bands start at 8pm. ... Buckcherry has three Bay Area dates lined up: Sept. 12 at Slim's in San Francisco; Sept. 14 at the Cactus Club in San Jose; and Sept. 15 at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. ... After a winning performance late last month at JJ's Blues, the Josh Williamson Band makes a quick return to perform on Aug. 4 at JJ's' Young Generation of the Blues event. ... Metro's Music in the Park continues this Thursday (Aug. 2) with Toots and the Maytals. The free concert will run 5-8:15pm at Plaza de Cesar Chavez. Next week's concert (held Aug. 9) features Jules Broussard.
