Roach Rising The breaks keep falling Papa Roach's way with TV slots and MTV nominations By Sarah Quelland WHAT A WHIRLWIND RIDE it's been for Papa Roach since the band signed with DreamWorks Records last fall. Its label debut, Infest, keeps sailing up the Billboard Top 200 chart, with its current position at No. 5. The band was one of the most-talked-about guests ever on radio's Loveline and made its late-night-TV debut with a nervous performance on Late Night With Conan O'Brien. Papa Roach's latest accolade is a nomination in the Best New Artist in a Video category for the MTV Music Awards. The competition? Christina Aguilera, Macy Gray, Pink and Sisqo. The awards will be broadcast live on MTV from Radio City Music Hall Sept. 7 at 5pm. P-Roach is working on the video for its second single, "Broken Home," which manager Gary Avila says "will be a real tearjerker." Early reports say Insolence is in the process of signing with Maverick Records label and may be touring with the Deftones. We'll have more on that as details come in. ... The Rhyme and Reason 2000 tour featuring the Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine has been postponed due to a bicycling injury sustained by Beastie Boy Mike D that reportedly has him out of commission for two to three months. Rage also delayed its three-night stint at the Fillmore (scheduled for last week), where it was planning to record its first live record. The 17th annual Reggae on the River will be held this weekend (Aug. 4-6) at French's Camp in Piercy, but don't drive up unless you already have a ticket. The event is sold out, and organizers have announced that there will be no tickets at the gate. Vehicles carrying people without tickets will not be allowed to exit the highway into the festival. Sloe recently returned from a trip to Amarillo, Texas, to participate in the Brian Deneke Memorial Festival. The two-day event was held July 29-30, and the lineup included Government Cheese, Four Letter Word, Free Radicals and Mike Watt and the Pair of Pliers. The 19-year-old Deneke was allegedly deliberately run over and killed in December 1997 because he listened to punk music. Visit www.briandeneke.org for more info. Sloe has a new album titled Inexact Replica and will perform at the Cactus Club this Saturday (Aug. 5) with the Revolution Smile, Ellis, Falling Tower and others. Pat Burtis, Tina Sicre and Kelsi Arnold kick off the Palo Alto-based Green River Concert Series this Sunday (Aug. 6) at 5pm. The house concert will be held at 2297 Oberlin St. in Palo Alto, and admission is $5-$10. Call 650.855.7004 for reservations. ... Though technically the Posies broke up in 1998, co-founders Jonathan Auer and Kenneth Stringfellow have continued on as an acoustic duo. Jon and Ken are doing a club tour to accompany their live acoustic album, In Case You Didn't Feel Like Plugging In. The two perform at Fuel this Tuesday (Aug. 8). Following the tremendously satisfying release of Poison's Crack a Smile ... and More! last March, the band recently released a new disc, Power to the People, that's being distributed through Jimmy Buffett's Mailboat Records. The album--with the vocalist Bret Michaels, drummer Rikki Rockett, bassist Bobby Dall and guitarist C.C. DeVille--features five new studio cuts and 10 live tracks from the 1999 summer tour. The album is available in stores and online. Poison comes to Shoreline Ampitheatre next Friday (Aug. 11), with Dokken, Cinderella and Slaughter. ... San Francisco's the Damsels were one of nine bands in the country to receive the Benefiting Emerging Artists in Music (B.E.A.M.) grant sponsored by Jim Beam. ...
