LOCAL INTEREST is sparking early for the eighth annual SoFA Festival, and details on the event, scheduled for Sept. 19, have been released. Bands from the South Bay, Santa Cruz and San Francisco area are invited to enter the opening-act live-band contest. Send a package, including tape or CD, biography, photos and a press release, to Opening Act Band Contest, Gary Walker Productions, 12805 Highway 9, Boulder Creek, 95006. The deadline is Aug. 16. In addition to music, the SoFA Fest will feature a block-long juried art show. Artists wishing to be considered should submit color photos to the address above. LIVE 105's The DJ With No Name's Local Lounge Vol. One compilation hit the shelves of Wherehouse Records stores. Local bands on the album include Spitkiss, Stunt Monkey, Boy Kicks Girl and the Forgotten. LIVE 105 is bringing the Deftones in for a free show tonight (Aug. 5) at Slim's in San Francisco. Fresh from a recording session at NRG Recording Services in North Hollywood, Vacaville-based Papa Roach kicks things off at 8:30pm. Doors are at 7pm; no lining up before 5pm. The following night (Aug. 6), Papa Roach is back in the South Bay at the Cactus Club with heavy locals SECURITY and Down2None, and Santa Cruz-based the Lonely Kings.
True to Form opens for Testament at the Whisky A-Go-Go in Hollywood on Aug. 26. The band's chartering a bus for a round-trip party-ride down south and has room for 40 guests. The cost is $50 plus, cover and those interested should send an email to [email protected] by Aug. 8. ... Burning Man is drawing nigh: Aug. 30Sept. 6 in Black Rock Desert, Nevada. The ticket price for the annual participants-only festival dedicated to radical self-expression stands at $100 and will rise to $105 by Aug. 30, increasing by $5 every day through Sept. 4, when the event culminates in the burning of the man. To heat things up, a Black-Rock Black-Lite Desert Blast-Off is set to launch Aug. 7 at the Flambé Lounge located at the International Ballroom on 50 Oak St., off Van Ness and Market in San Francisco.
