Drop to Rock Big festival weekends came in waves By Sarah Quelland THE STOP drop and rock festival runs this Thursday through Sunday (Aug. 16-19) at the Gaslighter Theater in Campbell. The all-ages event kicks off Thursday with the Orange Peels, Jupiter Sun, Bunkbed, the Contrail and the Velvet Teen, followed by performances by Slow Gherkin, the Gadjits, Anti 45, Short Round and Suburban Legend on Friday; the Mr. T Experience, the Eyeliners, the Timeouts, the Sidekicks and Under 21 on Saturday; and Luckie Strike, Stunt Monkey (which celebrates the release of its new album, With Lifelike Action!), Prop 808, the Masked Animals and Muckruckers on Sunday. Other events tied into the festival include a Friday-night show at the Los Gatos Outhouse with Xiu Xiu, Quazar & Gwendolyn, New Bethel, the Jim Yoshi Pile Up and Rum Diary (Ee will not be performing--Fixture will fill that spot) and a midnight showing of Tommy at the Aquarius Theater in Palo Alto. Michael Gira, (Angels of Light/Swans), Amber Asylum, Steve Von Till and Scott Kelly kick things off, followed by Shellac, Neurosis, Zeni Geva and Oxbow on Aug. 17; Shellac, Neurosis, Isis and Thrones on Aug. 18; and Zoviet France, Tribes of Neurot, Tarentel and KK Null on Aug. 19. KFJC-FM (89.7) will be broadcasting live. Nadine's Wild Weekend kicks off Thursday (Aug. 16) as well, with Spike 1000, the KGB, Vegas de Milo and the Moss Brothers playing at the Fillmore. Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted will debut his new band, EchoBrain, on the closing night of Nadine's Wild Weekend, performing at Bimbo's 365 on Aug. 19. The Cactus Club hosts two big rock shows this weekend with Willhaven, Shortie, Sloe, Keeping Ellis, Blood Red, downside and A Burning Water playing on the happy hour and main stages this Saturday (Aug. 18) at 7pm. On Sunday (Aug. 19) Flush, Double Down, Tirebelly, Hostility, Impeller, Luxt and Wingnut perform. ... Interscope Records will be rereleasing dredg's Leitmotif on Sept. 11, and the band will celebrate its newfound national distribution with a performance at the Cactus Club on Sept. 15 with Tenfold. ... Gary & Babs are playing a happy-hour show at the Cactus next Monday (Aug. 20); they says that anyone who shows up wearing a clown suit will get free drinks. Next week Maritime Hall is hosting a three-day punk extravaganza titled Holidays in the Sun, featuring high-caliber imports from England. On Aug. 24, catch Cockney Rejects, GBH, Youth Brigade, U.S. Bombs, Mad Parade, the Worthless and others; on Aug. 25, the Exploited, Slaughter and the Dog, the Dickies, the Casualties, Lower Class Brat, Reducers SF, the Generators, Strychnine, Snap-Her and others perform; and Sham 69, Anti-Nowhere League, One Man Army, Oxymoron, the Forgotten, the Unseen, the Boils, Dead Empty, the Bodies, Pistol Grip and others close out the big event on Aug. 26. Next week's concert (held Aug. 23) features Dave Meniketti and local band Ones and Zeros, which won the MLS Battle of the Bands at the Usual and performed at the All Star Game.
