FOR BONA FIDE Mexican food at bargain-basement prices, Super Taqueria at the corner of 10th and William streets just can't be topped. I infiltrated Super Taq at least once a month during my eight years at San Jose State University. On any given day, a good number of the customers are Mexicans, which sets my gringo-sense tingling. The place is definitely authentic.

Every time I leave the country, the biggest thing I miss about California is the Mexican food--and every time a friend from Europe hits town, I personally escort him or her to Super Taq. Invariably. he devours it all and complains that you can't get real Mexican food where he comes from. Enough said.

At Super Taq, a regular carne asada burrito clocks in at exactly $3.02, including tax. Two regular tacos ($1.69 each) with adovada (barbecue pork), cilantro and onions go perfectly with either of the two house hot sauces--one red and one green. A chile verde burrito goes down nice with a cold cup of horchata--the spectacular pasty-white drink of choice. If you're not a carnivore, no problem. The no-meat burrito still fills the stomach nicely.

And no matter what you order, it all goes good with beer. Imports like Dos Equis and Negra Modelo are an economical $2.50, and domestics are chump change at $2. Don't forget to save a few pennies for the occasional stray panhandler out on the sidewalk.
