Day on the Green returns; Family Values follows; and lots of CD releases

IT'S BEEN YEARS since the last Day on the Green, but now KSJO and Budweiser are bringing the music festival to the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds Oct. 10. Megadeth, Sammy Hagar, Sprung Monkey and Loudmouth are included in the lineup. Tickets are $28. ... Queens of the Stone Age, Other Star People and dredg have a show coming up Saturday (Sept. 11) at the Cactus Club. Sex Mob comes to Fuel Sunday (Sept. 12). On Wednesday (Sept. 15), Tribal Disco Noise, NinePastNine and Leisure hold a big birthday celebration in honor of Tamar Teifeld at the Cactus. ... Some of the key figures in the history of hip-hop are leading the Original Fresh Fest, a celebration of the 20th anniversary of hip-hop. Included in the lineup are musical pioneers Run DMC, the Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Kurtis Blow and Whodini. The concert takes place Sept. 10 at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley.

More bands have been announced for Family Values '99, which makes its Bay Area stop Oct. 19 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Limp Bizkit will headline the local lineup along with Filter, Primus, System of a Down, Method Man and Redman.

Primus has a new disc on the way. Due for release the day of the Family Values show, the album, titled AntiPop, was mixed by Toby Wright (Korn, Kiss, Alice in Chains) and engineered by Oz Fritz. Of its whole slew of guest artists, highlights include the Stewart Copeland-produced "Dirty Drowning Man" the Tom Waits-produced "Coattails of a Dead Man," and the James Hetfield/Jim Martin collaboration on "Eclectic Electric." Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello, Tricky's Martina and South Park's Matt Stone also contribute.

Foothill College hosts the Northern California Songwriters Association's annual conference Sept. 11-12. NCSA is a nonprofit organization that offers monthly events including song screenings, open mic nights and work-in-progress sessions. Giving local musicians access to producers, publishers and A&R scouts, this conference is designed to help local songwriters better their craft and make industry connections. Experts in the field will lead various seminars and offer song screenings where work will be listened to and evaluated. For more information or to join NCSA visit www.ncsasong.org.

On Sept. 14, '80s duo Yaz releases a collection of 15 tracks selected from its albums Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both. Titled Yaz--The Best Of, the album contains a new mix and a rare remix of "Situation" as well as new mixes of "Don't Go" and "Only You." ... Queensryche releases its latest, Q2K, the same day. The long-standing hard-rock band featuring Geoff Tate on vocals, Michael Wilton and Kelly Gray on guitars, Eddie Jackson on bass and Scott Rockenfield on drums is scheduled to perform at the San Jose State Event Center Nov. 6.

With My Own Prison going on its 100th week on Billboard's Top 200 chart, Creed's back with a new album, Human Clay, due in stores Sept. 28. The band has a local stop lined up with Our Lady of Peace Nov. 12 at the Event Center.... On a local level, Johnny Dilks releases his CD Wednesday (Sept. 15) at Agenda Lounge. Cactus hosts two CD parties within the next month as Caradura releases its CD Sept. 29 and SWRV releases its disc Oct. 10. ... The Edge has a secret show coming up
Oct. 10. This is one of three, if the rumors are true. All I can say is if you like women who rock, buy a ticket when they go on sale. It should be worth it.
