FRIENDS AND I spent hundreds of student loan dollars on beer and food at Grande Pizzeria in the early-to-mid-'90s. We all got a joy out of watching the employees switch effortlessly between English, Italian and Spanish. To this day, it's still an SJSU hangout. Students, staff and faculty pour in and out of this family-owned place on a daily basis.
A massive slice of pepperoni and a glass of Budweiser comes out to $5.85, including tax. You can experiment with a hundred different ways to cut the slice or slyly watch how others tackle the slab. Call it a heart-stopper special if you must, but Grande's meatball sandwich ($6.95) is likewise a sloppy and beautiful mess of meal. You need at least three napkins to get through the whole thing. In fact, all the portions at Grande are, as the moniker implies, huge. The spaghetti in mushroom sauce a la carte is piled to the ceiling with mushrooms. And now--if you can tolerate football--they offer 99-cent beers and humongous $5 cheeseburgers on Monday nights.
