The proposed events of the 2012 Olympics in San Francisco will sprawl throughout the region

IF SAN FRANCISCO successfully snags the summer 2012 Olympics, here's a sampling of the athletic events and ceremonies proposed for venues in the South Bay and on the peninsula (which outnumber the San Francisco events). To get a map and more details, visit www.basoc2012.org.

Stanford University in Palo Alto

  • Athletics, including track and field, at Stanford Stadium (renamed Olympic Stadium)

  • Archery at West Campus Field

  • Baseball at Sunken Diamond

  • Badminton at Maples Pavilion

  • Swimming, synchronized swimming and diving at Avery Swim Center

  • Modern pentathlon (includes fencing, pistol shooting, swimming, equestrian show jumping and cross-country running) at Maples Pavilion and Sunken Diamond

  • Olympic ceremonies at Stanford Stadium

    San Jose

  • Gymnastics at Compaq Center (which will be HP Pavilion by then)

  • Hockey at Spartan Stadium at San Jose State University

  • Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling at San Jose Convention Center

  • Judo at San Jose Convention Center

    Santa Clara

  • Baseball (preliminaries) at Buck Shaw Stadium at Santa Clara University

  • Basketball (preliminaries) at Leavey Center at Santa Clara University

  • Cycling (track) at Santa Clara Soccer Park

  • Water polo at George Haines International Swim Center

  • Tennis (venue not yet determined)
