Season's Freakings

Halloween offers a cornucopia of musical treats

WITH HALLOWEEN FALLING on a Wednesday this year, the days leading up to the holiday are ripe with shows, with LIVE 105'S HALLOWEEN SHOW at SHORELINE AMPHITHEATRE, featuring JANE'S ADDICTION, INSOLENCE, SEVENDUST, A.F.I., STEREO MCS, DJ ALEX GRAHAM, ONESIDEZERO, WICKED and FUNKY TEKNO TRIBE, kicking things off on Friday (Oct. 26).

Other musical highlights of the Halloween season include the LOCAL KOALITION'S HALLOWEEN BALL on Saturday (Oct. 27) at the CACTUS CLUB with performances by REACTION 31, DOWNSIDE, KRONIC, MOTIV and DRIST and a midnight costume contest. Word is that downside is engaged in some pretty serious talks with several interested major labels. . . . The LOS GATOS OUTHOUSE gets in on the Halloweeny fun this year, holding its first HALLOWEEN BALL on Saturday with performances by the HONOR SYSTEM, AUDIO CRUSH, SHORT ROUND, PODSTAR and CRUSHSTORY. The all-ages bash includes giveaways, door prizes and a special Outhouse surprise for best costume. . . . For more deviant Halloween thrill seekers, the HALLOWEEN FETISH BALL, which boasts a costume contest and slave auction, will be held Saturday, 9pm-6am at the POWER EXCHANGE in San Francisco.

On Sunday (Oct. 28), the Cactus Club hosts two shows with the VEX, STUB, IDLE DISPOSITION and UZI SUICIDE starting at 4pm and the CHOP TOPS, SETACIDE, EUPHONIC FLUX and SNEAKY CREEKANS taking over at 8:30pm. . . . Tuesday (Oct. 30) Zero magazine presents ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT, the DISTILLERS and ONE TIME ANGELS at the USUAL. Zero also presents the last-ever show at MARITIME HALL as we know it on Halloween (Oct. 31) with the DROPKICK MURPHYS, TIGER ARMY and SICK OF IT ALL.

Other events being held on Halloween proper (Oct. 31) include the Usual's FREAKY DEEKY HALLOWEEN PARTY; AGENDA LOUNGE's MONSTERBASH; the LIDO's DEVIATION (downstairs) and MARISELA'S GLAMOROUS HALLOWEEN PARTY (upstairs); the ICON NIGHTCLUB's HALLOWEEN COSTUME BASH; and the BLACK CAT WALK in Los Gatos with eight establishments (MOUNTAIN CHARLEY'S SALOON, the BLACK WATCH, LOS GATOS BAR & GRILL, #1 BROADWAY, C.B. HANNEGAN'S, STEAMER'S GRILLHOUSE, CARRY NATION'S and DOUBLE D'S) participating with some combination of drink specials, door prizes, costume contests and live music.

Halloween revelers with blues proclivities should feel at home both Saturday and Wednesday as JJ'S BLUES offers two Halloween costume bashes. On Oct. 27, RUDY PARRIS and CHRIS CAIN perform and Oct. 31 features DAVID THORNTON and ANDY MAZZILLI. . . . DANCE PLEX (better known as POLLY ESTHER'S) also offers two nights of crazy behavior with Halloween specials and more than $2,000 in prize giveaways on Oct. 27 and Oct. 31. . . . The BACKBEAT follows suit with THE LOST CITY OF ATLANTIS Halloween event with more than $8,000 in cash and prizes on Oct. 27 and TREAT night with giveaways and candy on Oct. 31....On Oct. 31, the VOODOO LOUNGE hosts a Halloween costume party with prizes and music by DJ FRANK MORALES. ALL THE NEWS: AFROMAN, FABOLOUS & NATE DOGG, JA RULE, NELLY & THE ST. LUNATIKS, P.DIDDY & THE BAD BOY FAMILY, TOYA, TYRESE, LUDACRIS and others play WILD 94.9's PEACE AND UNITY BOMB at the COMPAQ CENTER next Thursday (Oct. 25)....The QUEENSRYCHE show scheduled for Nov. 4 at the WARFIELD has been moved to the FILLMORE. . . . WEEZER makes good on its promise to make up that local date that was canceled after the terrorist attacks. The leading champions of geek rock play the SJSU EVENT CENTER on Nov. 19 with actor JACK BLACK (of High Fidelity and the upcoming Shallow Hal) and KYLE GASS' comedy duo TENACIOUS D (which also performs a Halloween show at the Warfield on Oct. 31) and JIMMY EAT WORLD.
