[whitespace] Halloween Heads-Up

A rundown of some of the Bay Area's holiday happenings

By Sarah Quelland

IT'S ALWAYS A DRAG when major holidays fall on weekdays, rather than weekends, when most of the population has the luxury of sleeping in and recovering from the festivities of the night before. Since Halloween falls on a Tuesday this year (Oct. 31), lots of Halloween bashes will be taking place over the weekend to help ease the pain. The Cactus Club did have Salmon and Videodrone scheduled for Oct. 28. But when those bands canceled, the club announced a special show by 10 Ton Hammer. Now, however, none of those bands will be performing. Instead, catch Movement, Shortie, EMB, Demion and Fetus by the Pound at the club on Saturday (Oct. 28).

That same night, the Usual holds the Pulse Halloween Fest with Garth, Miguel Migs, Grayhound and Wicked; Fuel hosts a Dia de los Muertos celebration with Charanga Nueve; Agenda Lounge features the MIX 106.5 Halloween Bash with $500 cash and prizes for best costume; J.J.'s Blues offers a Halloween party with Chris Cain; Britannia Arms Almaden presents the Return of Frank Joseph and KSJO night (with prizes for best costume, including a chance to win tickets to the Oct. 31 Pearl Jam concert at Shoreline Amphitheatre); Britannia Arms Cupertino features music by Reagle Beagle and more prizes and giveaways from KSJO; the Catalyst presents Nightmare on Booty Street with Superbooty; and the Halloween Fetish Ball will be held at the Power Exchange in San Francisco. BackBeat Nightclub also has the Night of the Living Dead party and costume contest Oct. 27-28.

On All Hallows Eve (Tuesday, Oct. 31), find Hayride to Hell, Chicken Coupe DeVille, Nekromantix and the Accidentals at the Usual; Ray Condo & His Ricochets at Fuel; Imperial Dub Tribe and DJs Special K, Nappy and Matt & Mike Slim at Agenda Lounge; Falling Tower and others at the Cactus Club; John Wedemeyer and W.H.A.T. at Bathtub Gin & Blues; the Cramps at the Fillmore in San Francisco; and Groovie Ghoulies and Magnolia Thunderfinger at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco. Pearl Jam and Supergrass also perform at Shoreline Amphitheatre.

This year it's being held in parking lot D at Paramount's Great America. Tickets are $14.95 Thursday, Sunday-Monday and $17.95 Friday-Saturday and Tuesday. Bring an extra $5-$8 for parking.

There's a "Rock Fight" going on at the Caravan tonight (Oct. 26) between Clay Wheels and the Cliftons. ... The Forgotten, Monkey, the Brownies and Aggro perform and Firmé celebrates its CD release at the third annual Zapatista Benefit Concert organized by Students for Justice. The all-ages event will be held Oct. 27 at the WORKS Gallery and tickets are $6. ... LIVE 105 holds its Halloween Freakshow and costume contest this Friday (Oct. 27) in Maritime Hall's lower ballroom with Orgy, Linkin Park and Dust for Life. Tickets are $10.53 and available at www.tickets.com. Testament, Agent Steel, 40 Grit, Psypheria, LD50 and Technocracy are scheduled to perform in Maritime's main hall on the same night (Oct. 27). ... A second Bay Area date has been added to the Anger Management Tour starring Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Eminem and Xzibit. In addition to the Nov. 17 engagement at the Cow Palace, the tour will now stop by the San Jose Arena Nov. 19. Tickets are $42.50 and available through Ticketmaster (408.998.TIXS).

Zen Guerilla and Gluecifer canceled their appearances at the Usual Nov. 26. Krenshaw and Ancient Astronaut will still perform. ... Deftones gave a less-than-stellar performance at the San Jose State University Event Center Oct. 17. Read the review.
