Aural Fixation Means to an End: The world meets a musical finish with new 'End of Days' soundtrack By Sarah Quelland The soundtrack to Arnold Schwarzenegger's blockbuster End of Days is now on shelves with an extremely impressive collection of current rock artists. The disc features new material from Korn, Limp Bizkit, Eminem, Everlast and Guns N' Roses ("Oh My God" is GNR's first new recording since 1993), as well as previously released cuts by Creed and Powerman 5000, a Rob Zombie remix and vintage tracks from Prodigy and Sonic Youth. Of local interest, Professional Murder Music, an L.A.-based band which features a former member of Spitkiss, guitarist Brian Harrah, makes an auspicious appearance on the soundtrack with its song "Slow." Led by vocalist Roman, who, much like Korn's Jonathan Davis in the early days, seems shy and soft-spoken when not in the spotlight but rages onstage, Professional Murder Music delivers a heavy, melodic meld of electronics and guitars. The band recently signed a deal with Geffen/Interscope records and is set to release its full-length label debut early next year. End of Days opens in wide release on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Last Friday (Nov. 12) was bittersweet as integral members of the local music scene turned up at the Cactus Club to say their goodbyes and good lucks to Gary Avila, known best as Papa Roach's manager. Avila recently got Papa Roach signed to DreamWorks Records and is now moving his offices to Sacramento with business partner and co-manager of Papa Roach Bret Bair. NinePastNine, Down2None, SWRV, Polar and Breach performed. Leisure, another Avila/Bair managed band which was scheduled to perform, had to cancel due to a family emergency. Although the name Big Zen might not spark recognition, its members are based here in the South Bay. The band is one of five nominees in the Los Angeles Music Awards' Outstanding National Artist category. The fourpiece, featuring Michael St. Germain on lead vocals and guitar, Albert Schweich on lead guitar and back-up vocals, Darren Shannon on bass guitar and Kenny Pardo on drums, is scheduled to perform at the awards ceremony tonight (Nov. 18) held at the esteemed House of Blues in L.A. The Creed/Our Lady Peace/Oleander concert set for last Friday (Nov. 12) at the San Jose State Event Center was cancelled due to the illness of Creed's lead singer, Scott Stapp. According to Bill Graham Presents, Creed will reschedule the concert and return sometime in February. Tickets for the Nov. 12 show will be honored on the rescheduled date, or they may be returned for a refund at the place of purchase. H.E.A.R. (Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers) presents a benefit concert this Saturday (Nov. 20) at the Grand Ballroom in the International Center at 50 Oak St. in San Francisco. DJ Perry Farrell--now Peretz--(yes, that's the Jane's Addiction/Porno for Pyros Perry Farrell), Michael Franti, DJ Quest, Eddie Def, DJ CUE (Space Travelers), DJ Polywog, DJ Platypus, David Denny & Carlos Reyes, along with rockers Swarm and other guests, take part in the event. Garbage and Lit are on the road as part of MTV's Campus Invasion tour, but the closest it gets to this area is a performance at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo Tuesday (Nov. 22). Lit, known for the hit single "My Own Worst Enemy" (from A Place in the Sun), releases its debut independent album, Tripping the Light Fantastic, on Nov. 23. ... Brian Setzer, who played a major role in the resurgence of rockabilly, dating back to his days with the Stray Cats, just released a comprehensive 18-track compilation titled The Brian Setzer Collection: 1981-1988, which contains six unreleased songs, early Stray Cats material and Setzer's solo recording sessions. Tonight (Nov. 18), Jacky Paper, Yerba Buena, Forbidden Planet and the Accidentals perform at the Cactus Club; MxPx, 22 Jacks and No Motiv perform at the Edge; James Brown performs at Maritime Hall; and Willie Nelson performs at the Marin Center.
