Groan Home Home Grown didn't live up to expectations at the Cactus Club By Sarah Quelland THE HOME GROWN show last Tuesday (Nov. 14) at the Cactus Club was a total bust. The band's album, Act Your Age, suggested that the group would put on a fun show with its silly poppy punk songs. Live though, the band members indulged themselves in idiotic stage patter and were really annoying. Too bad about that--I thought Home Grown could do better. The Anger Management concert with Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Eminem and Xzibit scheduled for last Sunday (Nov. 19) at the San Jose Arena was canceled. Refunds are available at place of purchase. ... Papa Roach is making a quick return to the Bay Area to perform at LIVE 105's annual Not So Silent Night concert. This year's event will be held Dec. 15 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium with Green Day, Deftones, A.F.I. and Disturbed. Tickets are $35.50 and proceeds benefit the Popular Noise Foundation and Music in Schools Today. P-Roach then embarks on the Master Bay Tour with Strung Out, then (hed)pe and Strung Out, then (hed)pe and Linkin Park supporting. Southern California's Alien Ant Farm will become one of the first bands to release an album on Papa Roach's own imprint, New Noize, on DreamWorks Records. The band had a date with P-Roach last Monday (Nov. 20) at the Three Oaks Community Center in Vacaville. Years ago, Three Oaks was one of the places P-Roach got its feet wet, and the concert was part of MTV's The Road Home. This special event was a benefit for Children of the Night, a camp for kids who come from broken homes. Next Saturday (Nov. 25), Alien Ant Farm performs with P-Roach in San Diego. After its album comes out (scheduled for a March release), the band is supposed to commit to a full U.S. tour with P-Roach. One of San Jose's premier rock bands, Remoter, is preparing to take the next step. Frontman Andrew Fleig is relocating to Los Angeles in early December to be closer to the action. The band plans on holding a CD-release party for its long-awaited album, Gun, Dec. 28 at the Usual. That will probably be the band's last South Bay appearance for quite some time. ... Local bands are holding a benefit for Luckie Strike to help raise funds to replace its equipment, which was stolen while the band was on tour in Texas. Luckie Strike, Outtaline, FreakbomB, Drain 26 and Prop 808 will perform next Fri (Dec. 1) at 7pm at the Outhouse behind Los Gatos High School. Tickets are $5, and the show is all ages. ... The Cactus Club holds an after-Thanksgiving blowout this Friday (Nov. 24). Luxt, Shortie, Sift, Willie's Conception, Down2None and Local ODdity are scheduled to perform. The 16+ event starts at 8pm. It might be time to start thinking about New Year's Eve. Currently announced New Year's Eve concerts (all on Dec. 31) include Insolence at the Cactus Club; Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade at the Fillmore; Reverend Horton Heat and the New Morty Show at Maritime Hall; the Other Ones, George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic and the Steve Kimock Band at the Oakland Arena; Phil Lesh & Friends at the Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium; Galactic and Ozomatli at the Warfield; Superbooty at the Catalyst; and the San Francisco New Year's Eve Superior Bash 2001 with Macy Gray, Basement Jaxx, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Vivendo de Pao and others at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Rumor has it Smash Mouth might throw a New Year's bash in San Jose as well.
