5 Places to Love

Brewpubs

Winter is a good time to explore the world of beer. Ale, porter, stout, barley wine and other heavier brews are made for the cold months when you can afford to pack on a little extra girth to see you through until spring. Here are five top local brewpubs to satisfy your malt beverage needs.

Gordon Biersch With more than a dozen locations across the country, the local chain is riding high. Palo Alto, the original location, is still a favorite. 604 Emerson St., Palo Alto. 650.323.7723.

Los Gatos Brewing Co. Once the home of the Noodle Palace, this brewery is now a palace of beer and fine eats. 130 N. Santa Cruz Ave., Los Gatos. 408.395.9929.

Mountain View Tied House Cafe and Brewery Master brewer Chuck Tom was in charge of brewing at Hong Kong's San Miguel Brewery for more than 30 years before coming to the Tied House, which makes beer under the Redwood Coast Brewing Co. label. 954 Villa St., Mountain View. 650.965.2739. Also a downtown San Jose location at 65 N. San Pedro St., 408.295.2734.

Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery Yes, it's a national chain, but that doesn't affect the taste of the beer. 1875 S. Bascom Ave. (in the Pruneyard), San Jose. 408.377.0707.

Seabright Brewery Pub and Restaurant The water's too cold at the beach so you're better off grabbing a seat on the patio at this ever-popular east side Santa Cruz brewery. 519 Seabright Ave., Santa Cruz. 831.295.2739.
