Dub FX mixes elements of soul, funk, dancehall and jazz with a roots-reggae vibe at Waves on Dec. 31. Hip Holidays The end-of-the-year parties come thick and fast By Sarah Quelland LIVE 105'S Not So Silent Night rang in the holiday concert season on Dec. 7 at the Compaq Center (read the review). But there's more to come with other holiday celebrations, including the Outhouse Holiday Hoe-Down, featuring Chris Murray, Monkey, Solemite, Hidden Pocket and the Genues, at the Los Gatos Outhouse on Dec. 21; Dante's Naughty or Nice Xmas party with surprise DJs on Dec. 21 at the Icon Nightclub; and the annual Dysfunctional Family Xmas with Krenshaw, Lavabone, SECURITY, Setacide and Breach at the Cactus Club on Dec. 23. Some local New Year's Eve celebrations (all held Dec. 31) include Channel 104.9's Cheap Ass New Year's Eve with Ones and Zeros, Triple Seven, the Restitution, Wrekhouse, the Blind and Disquiet at the Usual; Digital Soul with DJs Josh Werner, Richard Summerhayes, Melanie, D'Lux, Mark Campell, Huey, Proxy, Hak, Das, Siphon and Genome at the Cactus; the Reggae New Year's Eve Extravaganza with Dub FX and Native Elements at Waves; Hot Town Jubilee at the Hedley Club; and Little John Chrisley at JJ's Blues. Still, some of the biggest bashes are being held up north. For cutting-edge entertainment and a truly surreal New Year's Eve experience, my money's on the Anon Salon's Sea of Dreams 02: Dive Ocean at the Regency Building in San Francisco. This New Year's "Eve-olution" party was dreamed up by the pARTy/SCIENCE collective responsible for the Burning Man Flambé Lounge among other things and promises to be a nonstop whirlwind. Highlights include live performances by Lost at Last, Brain Garden and FoxGluv; DJs Lorin, Jenö, Laird, Mr. Sandman and Kris Nova; Music, Magic and Circus Eccentricities from members of Teatro ZinZanni and Cirque du Soleil, plus an interactive video playspace, tarot readings, a hall of mirrors and other strange and unusual goodies. Tickets are $60 and available through TicketWeb. The elaborate Organic--New Year's Eve Rising celebration at the Ibiza Resort Hotel in Oakland also looks to offer a bizarre feast for all senses. Spearheaded by the Funky Tekno Tribe clan, this all-night party (which runs 8pm-7am) includes live entertainment by Uberschall (an improv band featuring members of Blue Man Group), Abravida, an acrobatic group formed by former members of De La Guarda and Cirque du Soleil, and Archie Bell's Future Kulture. DJs Donald Glaude, Mark Farina, King Britt, Graeme, Hector Cardenas, Arturo Garces, Dawn of Sound and many more will be spinning underground house, tribal, drum 'n' bass, trip-hop and funky breakbeat in three separate rooms. Coolworld's Planet New Year 2002 at the Cow Palace also looks like an over-the-top party with Del the Funky Homosapien, too many DJs to mention and five entertainment arenas. ... For old-school rockers, L.A. Guns plays the Rockin' New Year's Eve at the Pound in San Francisco. ALL THE NEWS: Selected by a panel of music industry professionals, the nominees for this year's California Music Awards (formerly the BAMMIES) have been announced. Of local interest, Smash Mouth received nominations for Outstanding Rock/Pop Album, Outstanding Group and Outstanding Single ("I'm a Believer"), and Greg Camp is up for Outstanding Songwriter. Now it's time for the public to cast its vote to determine who ultimately wins the awards. Train, Cake, Weezer, for stars, Tool, Gorillaz and No Doubt lead the charge with multiple nominations.
