A guide to New Year's Eve music and party events around the bay

By Sarah Quelland

IT'S GETTING DOWN to the wire to make plans for New Year's Eve. Last year was a bit of a let-down for many people, due to the hysteria over Y2K. Rather than partying like it was 1999, lots of folks holed up in their homes waiting for the world to end. Since it didn't, this year presents the opportunity to make up for lost time. Upscale restaurants are offering special packages, and most neighborhood watering holes will be holding some sort of special fiesta with live music, DJs or karaoke. There will be quite a few concerts as well.

Promising shows in the South Bay include Flogging Molly, Krenshaw, the Odd Numbers and Serrated at the Usual; Monkey at the Britannia Arms in Cupertino; Fontain's Muse and the Y-Fronts at the King's Head Pub in Campbell; John Wedemeyer and W.H.A.T. at Bathtub Gin and Blues in Sunnyvale; and the Post St. New Year's Eve Party at Waves Smokehouse & Saloon. Although listed on earlier schedules, Insolence will not be performing at the Cactus Club.

San Francisco offers Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade and Banyan at the Fillmore; Reverend Horton Heat and the New Morty Show at Maritime Hall; the Melvins, Fantomas Big Band, Kid 606 and Lucky Stars at Slim's; Galactic and Ozomatli at the Warfield; the Radiators at the Great American Music Hall; Sister Double Happiness and Slojack at Bottom of the Hill; Blue Period, Human Life Index and Deadweight at the Paradise Lounge; Greyboy All-Stars Sidecar Project and Robert Walter's 20th Congress at the Elbo Room; the Kinetics, Mover and Call and Response at Cafe du Nord; Box Set at the Last Day Saloon; Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers at Jardinaire's; and the annual New Year's Eve Superior Bash with Macy Gray, Basement Jaxx, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Vivendo de Pao, the Cheeseballs and lots of DJs at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. ... In the East Bay, the Other Ones, George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic and the Steve Kimock Band celebrate at the Oakland Arena; Phil Lesh & Friends perform at the Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium; and Charlie Hunter will be at Yoshi's. ... Superbooty puts on a holiday extravaganza at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, and Cocoanut Grove is holding a big New Year's Eve party. ... More New Year's Eve events can be found online at /calendar.

The Cactus Club's annual Dysfunctional Family Xmas benefit concert will be held this weekend. Bring canned food or a new toy for $2 off.

Swarm put on a scorching show last Friday (Dec. 15) at the Paradise Lounge in San Francisco. Members of Machine Head, Systematic and other area bands were spotted in the crowd, and the band delivered as promised. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell jumped onstage to join Swarm for AC/DC's "Night Prowler" and "Beating Around the Bush."

Papa Roach, (hed)pe and Linkin Park perform this Friday (Dec. 22) at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento. P-Roach also performed last Friday (Dec. 15) at LIVE 105's Not So Silent Night concert at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Read a full review.
