JAZZ CATS dig the winter. While the summer is all about the biggest names in pop playing the biggest venues, the colder months usually bring the hottest acts in jazz to the Bay Area. And that's certainly the case in the South Bay this winter as the San Jose Jazz Society presents its 17th annual Sunday Jazz Series at the Palm Room in downtown San Jose.

Organizers recently announced the lineup for the new 13-week series, which runs from Jan. 2 to March 27, and it's an eclectic schedule of top-notch local and national acts that range stylistically from blues and swing to Brazilian and contemporary jazz.

Highlights include East Bay vocal-great Kim Nalley (pictured) on Jan. 9, San Mateo County piano-hotshot Taylor Eigsti on Jan. 16 and the explosive duo of pianist Benny Green and guitarist Russell Malone on Feb. 27.

Although best known for putting on the free San Jose Jazz Festival each summer, SJJS keeps the music pumping all year long in the Bay Area.
