Most staggering of all is the fact that the 22-year-old Mellow has absorbed all of the many influences that come through in his music in just a few short years.
“Both of my parents are pastors,” he says. “I wasn’t allowed to listen to secular music until I was 16 or 17 years old. I’m just finding out about a lot of stuff now.”
This year has brought a lot of changes for Young Science. Mellow added two more members live for a more full band sound, but now Nunez is leaving for San Diego, leaving him for the time being with a trio. He also moved from his native San Jose to San Francisco in the last year, although that hasn’t brought as many changes as one might think.
“I’m not living in my mom’s house anymore, so that’s different,” he says. “I get to work on music later.”
Young Science performs on the Local Band Stage at BFD on Saturday, June 2 at Shoreline Amphitheatre.
