Provoker is a Bay Area-based band founded as a solo project by Jonathon Lopez to create horror film soundtracks. The band expanded after he met musician Christian Petty. Though Petty sang in a decidedly more R&B style than Lopez’s dark synth stylings, the pair found a way to combine forces and create Provoker. The band’s unique fusion of genres results in a sound that is both familiar and refreshing. Each listen reveals hints of shoegaze, lo-fi, goth and soul, combining into a sonic field that feels nostalgic and innovative. Provoker will be playing at the Ritz next week, supported by RIKI, Hook-Ups, and DJ Basura. (TM)
