At Mount Madonna School, the largest event of the year is Ramayana!, a Broadway-scale musical acted by its preschool through grade 12 students. The youngest play forest animals; slightly older students become dancers, singers and martial artists; high schoolers shine as lead characters. Now in its 45th year, the annual performance has amassed a mainstream audience, but the parents and staff power the show, becoming makeup artists, prop makers, technicians and stage crew in a stunning display of a school community. Ramayana! tells a traditional story with full grandeur—including artful stage combat, elaborate sets and even a 25-foot puppet.
