In 1867 the French composer Charles Gounod gave one of the world’s most famous love stories the opera treatment, resulting in Roméo et Juliette. Upon the adaptation’s release, a prominent London critic described it as “a series of very pretty duets, varied by a sparkling waltz air for Juliet.” In Opera San Jose’s production, celebrated sopranos Melissa Sondhi and Jasmine Habersham share the role of Juliette, singing spellbound audiences through the highs and lows of young romance alongside Joshua Sanders as Romeo. There’s one weekend left to experience the star-crossed tragedy in French, a language that brings subtlety, romance and grace to this classic.
