The term “launch” takes on new meaning when it comes to Sally Ashton’s celestially inspired poetry collection Listening to Mars (Cornerstone Press). Editor-in-chief of DMQ Review and professor emerita of poetry at SJSU, Ashton is a generous force in Bay Area poetry. Her latest book takes on the turmoil of the past several years, zooming in on the microscopic world of a virus that stopped the world in its tracks and zooming out to consider the irony of space travel in an era of climate crisis. These wildly shifting perspectives could cause whiplash in another’s hands, but Ashton’s warmth, humor and enduring curiosity make for a lovely journey. (AM)
