.Sankai Juku at Stanford

The avant-garde dance style of butoh started in late 1950s Japan, exploring taboo topics stirred by war and atomic bombings. This Saturday evening only, internationally-touring dance troupe Sankai Juku brings their butoh performance KŌSA – Between Two Mirrors to Stanford’s Memorial Auditorium. As a postmodern departure from Western dance aesthetics, KŌSA strips the stage of decor in order to present “pure dance,” director Amagatsu Ushio explains, so that audiences may enter “my universe with as much curiosity as that which inhabited us at the first creation.” Founded in 1975, Sankai Juku is known worldwide for their refined movements and emotional depth.
