Calamity and comedy go hand-in-hand. Take Philip King’s celebrated play See How They Run, the newest production at Santa Clara Players, for example. Evoking the nursery rhyme “Three Blind Mice” with its title, the play centers on Reverend Lionel Toop and wife Penelope. Situated in a vicarage in Oxfordshire, the couple becomes increasingly overwhelmed by a barrage of guests, including an American actress, a cockney maid with a penchant for American movies, a widower drinking for the first time and an escaped prisoner disguised as a clergyman. See How They Run is a farcical romp relying on classic tropes like mistaken identity to tell a chaotic and hilarious story.
