Japanese musician Senri Oe performed an astonishing act of shapeshifting at age 47: after decades as a pop star, he became a jazz pianist. He kicked this era off with a move to Manhattan to study jazz at The New School in 2008, his dachshund puppy Peace in tow. His abrupt turn from choreographed dances in sold-out stadiums to the nuanced art of jazz was a risk that paid off, leading to his past two decades of successful albums like 2012’s Boys Mature Slow. For Oe—whose early pop-stardom caught him by surprise—a life in jazz has also been a childhood dream fulfilled.
