.Shostakovich’s Fourth Symphony in Redwood City

Dmitri Shostakovich’s Gustav Mahler-influenced Fourth Symphony was composed in 1936 amid Stalin’s bloody reign. The Russian dictator was not a fan, resulting in the symphony not making its premier until 25 years later, after being lost during World War II and then found again. This exciting piece of music with an equally exciting history requires a large orchestra, and while the opening waltz is widely recognized, the entire composition is rarely staged. The Redwoods Symphony Orchestra will present the Fourth Symphony and welcome local bassoon virtuoso Yueh Chou to play Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto.
