Smuin Contemporary Ballet celebrates its 30th anniversary year with Dance Series 1, a sequence of evocative dances in harmonious succession. Two of these performances are revivals from past seasons: Val Caniparoli’s Tutto Eccetto il Lavandino (“everything but the kitchen sink”) from 2014 and 2019’s The Man in Black by James Kudelka, which takes inspiration from the life and music of Johnny Cash. And then there is a world premiere to close the program: Darrell Grand Moultrie’s jubilant, Cuban jazz-rooted Salsa ‘Til Dawn. Together these three dances illuminate a language the choreographers and dancers of Smuin live by, the nuances of moving one’s body to tell a story.
