Over the last few years, the multi-talented music collective and DJ crew known as Sonido Clash have been building a buzz with their innovative, cross-cultural sounds, and energetic parties. This Friday, they return to downtown San Jose for the first night of the SubZERO Festival—hosting a two-room dance party, led by a diverse roster of DJs, who will blend sultry, tropical sounds with hyphy, electronic and bass music.
“Both Sonido Clash and Boomzap, are trying to represent music from an underground perspective,” says Sonido Clash founding member Thomas Aguilar, referring to his crew’s monthly parties, which have developed a reputation for their modern, dance- and hip-hop-infused spin on the traditional Latin genres of cumbia and tumbia. “This is a movement.”
Texas-based DJ duo, Santa Muerte, will be topping Sonido Clash’s SubZERO party at BackBar SoFa. Santa Muerte are veteran party rockers: members Pancho Briones (a.k.a Panchitron) and Leroy Bella (a.k.a. Sines) serve as resident DJs at one of Houston’s largest parties, Bombon. They say that their sets are an expression of the everyday mosaic of subcultures in the U.S.
“We want to make an emotional dance floor,” Briones says. Santa Muerte will be spinning bass, cumbia, rap, dancehall, trap and reggaeton—and not just the same old tracks you hear on the radio.
“These guys dig through the Internet for the some of the craziest samples and beats they can play.” DJ Goldenchild, Boom Zap’s manager, says—underscoring the diversity of sounds the duo draw upon.
Sonido Clash’s DJs for the night will be Turbo Sonidero, Chatos 1013 and Eazy Uno.
Just as their name suggests, the Sonido Clash crew is known for blending traditional Latin sounds, like cumbia, tumbia, with American hip hop, oldies and tropical tones.
“We’ve been meticulous with what we have chosen for this,” Bella says.
There will be two other DJs spinning alongside Santa Muerte in the Sonido Room. Los Disco Duro will perform with old school vocoders, live timbales and synths, and Roger Mas, who holds down the Mission District’s biggest weekly Latin dance party at the Make Out Room, will also be spinning. The Clash Room will be host to DJ Eni, Dubstantial and DJ Too Tall.
Sonido Clash vs. Return of the Boom Zap will be held Jun 5, at 9pm at BackBarSoFa.
