“This show’s about unity in the electronic music scene,” he says. “It’s a good way for the house and techno guys to get to know the glitch and dubstep guys.”
Unlike some old-school DJs, Fowler has happily embraced most of the changes in DJing over the years. But however much he likes what his son spins, he knows he’s not going to suddenly go glitch.
“I play house and techno. Always have. I’m not leaving the genre,” he says.
But then, who knows what kind of influence his son will end up having on him.. He says he’s already starting to get critiques.
“He’ll be like, ‘Dad, you came in a little hot there,’” says Fowler.
Despite their different styles, what he sees reflected in Lil Justin is devotion to the art form.
“You show your passion, and it bleeds,” he says of being a DJ father. “It’s not a hobby. We live it.”
The 2nd Annual South Bay Electronic Music Festival will be held Sunday, July 15 at Los Gatos Lodge, 1pm-10pm; free.
