In 1786, the Oratorio de la Santa Cueva church in Cadiz, Spain, commissioned famed Austrian composer Joseph Haydn to compose music for the Good Friday service. Haydn completed it a year later, producing one of the most meditative and poignant pieces of religious music ever. Named “The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross,” the orchestral piece explores the expressions Jesus purportedly said during his crucifixion. Now, centuries later, the Stanford Department of Music presents the St. Lawrence Good Friday Liturgical Performance of Haydn’s seminal piece. Stanford’s adaptation comprises eight slow and thoughtful sections culminating in a thundering final movement. It will also feature readings by Rev. Dr. Tiffany Steinwert to punctuate the performance. (TM)
