.Summer Concert Planner

It’s not too early to map out a great musical summer

music in the park, psychedelic furs

Wait…didn’t the spring equinox just pass the other day?

Amidst this week’s possible record-breaking temperatures, it almost feels like summer, and newly announced summer schedules from the South Bay’s major venues and producers have just dropped.

By planning early, music fans can invite friends, make dinner arrangements or plan an overnight mini-staycation. Early tickets allow concertgoers to claim the best seats and often the best values with early bird pricing.

These options range from a little extra money to ensure a seat or a bit of shade all the way up to, for example, the seven different “enhanced experiences” available at Metallica’s two-day Levi’s Stadium stint (“Lux Aeterna” offers a private viewing platform for eight friends; “Nothing Else Matters” includes a backstage meet & greet with two band members.)

San Jose Jazz just released its Summer Fest lineup, a strong one that features returning headliner Grammy-winning artist Common, Maroon 5 keyboardist PJ Morton, Femi Kuti and Mavis Staples.

Mountain Winery will present the legendary Smokey Robinson, theatrical Gypsy punkers Gogol Bordello, southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd, singer/songwriter Jackson Browne and Band of Horses with Iron and Wine.

Here at Metro Silicon Valley we’re also thinking about summer concerts as we plan this year’s Music in the Park shows. The first show to be announced—a July 26 concert at Plaza de Cesar Chavez—features The Psychedelic Furs, with Rooney opening.

And, just announced: quintessential hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult will take the stage September 19 at Music in the Park. The lineup includes original member Buck Dharma as well as Eric Bloom, a member since 1972, and multi-instrumentalist Richie Castellano (since 2003).

In addition to one essential certainty, a live version of “Don’t Fear the Reaper” (more cowbell!), the concert should also have new material. The group kicked into high gear in 2020, releasing its first album in 19 years. Titled The Symbol Remains, it garnered critical praise. And last year came the release of Ghost Stories, which reengineered a dozen songs originally recorded between 1978 and 1983. “It sounds like a long-lost BOC record to my ears,” Roeser told Billboard.

LaRussell will rap at Music in the Park on September 21.

Another reveal: Rapper LaRussell, who’s been in the game since 2018 and has recently seen his star on the rise, will perform at the park on September 21. Listen to his “Give Me a Beat,” which offers LaRussell’s take on the wider Bay Area—formed from his own background as a native of Vallejo.

He’s also capable of serious social commentary, as heard in “Glory/Do That Lil Dance You Be Doing,” the opening number in his appearance on NPR’s buzzy Tiny Desk Concert series. “I seen a lot of people die, they all look like me/Know your rights get denied when you look like me/We both on different sides but you look like me/How come the man in the mirror never looked like me.”
