San Jose’s premier Chicano theater company has been producing great stage productions for more than 30 years. Its latest is a staged reading of Departera, a new in-the-works play by actor and playwright Evelina Fernández. Departera revolves around Doña Juana, a midwife, who instead of helping deliver babies, helps the dying move from one plane to the next. When she takes on a young protege in Connie, they both must navigate the trials and tribulations of helping others meet their maker. In collaboration with Teatro Visión, Fernández spent the last year gathering stories from the San Jose community to give Departera a decidedly personal and familiar feel.
