Tia Carroll didn’t grow up with parents who played musical instruments, though her father wrote poetry as lyrics for sheet music. Nonetheless, her parents say she “sang instead of crying when she entered this world.” From a young age, she sang along with music on the radio but wouldn’t begin her music career until later in life, when her now ex-husband complimented her voice, advising her to sing in a band. She began in the old time rock ’n’ roll band Yakety-Yak then hit her stride as a solo artist. Today, the Richmond native is a proud contributor to Little Village, and a singer with an incredible tracklist.
