This Saturday will mark the last show that Palo Alto roots reggae group, Vintage Music Collective will play together. Not to worry, they are simply changing their name to Rafa, a Hebrew word that means “healing.” The members wanted to change the name to something they felt better reflected their music, and “healing” was definitely the vibe they’d already been sending out to reggae-loving audiences all across the bay, so it seemed perfect.
The show this Saturday is at the Sunset Magazine Celebration Weekend in Menlo Park, an event where “the pages of Celebration Magazine comes to life.” Other bands scheduled to play include Clint Baker’s Hot Four, The Randy Rigby Trio, Red Skunk Band and Bump City (a Tower of Power Tribute Band). There will also be several guest speakers at the event, the most famous being celebrity chef Guy Fieri.
The Vintage Music Collective are a 12-piece old school reggae band that play the smooth, soulful stuff that came out of Jamaica in the 70s before the genre exploded in the 80s and groups started incorporated synthesizers, rapping and bouncy drumbeats. VMC boast a wide range of ethnicities in the band—Tongan, Samoan, Fijian, South American, black and white people.
The Sunset Magazine Festival is 10am to 5pm, June 2 and June 3 at the Sunset Magazine headquarters at 85 Willow Road, Menlo Park. Vintage Music Collective will be closing out the Sunset Festival on Saturday from 3:30p – 5:00p. Tickets are $16.
