Bela Lugosi might be dead, but the goth scene is (un)alive and (not so) well. Major festivals like Cruel World and Darker Waves are possible because underground bands like Vision Video and Nox Novacula keep the genre’s undead corpse animated and thriving. Vision Video draws on the Cure, Joy Division and New Order for a sound that harkens to the Smiths. Their name came from their local VHS rental store, and it’s worth noting there’s a Christian-based movie distribution company by the same name—like a chef’s kiss from the guy below himself. Where Vision Video writes beautiful melodies, Nox Novacula digs up the crunchy-yet-dancy sounds of Deathrock via Siouxsie and the Banshees, 45 Grave and Sisters of Mercy.
