5. A New Work by Lynn Hershman Leeson
Long before Twitter feeds become fodder for art pieces, Bay Area artist Lynn Hershman Leeson was busy creating edgy site-based installations (her Dante Hotel so uncannily reproduced a murder that police thought it was a real crime scene), user-interaction videodiscs and robot sculptures. More recently, she turned to filmmaking with Conceiving Ada, in which Tilda Swinton plays the early female computer creator. For ZERO1, she contributes Present Tense, a small, eerie row of three small glass beakers filled with water. The surfaces serve as screens for projections of swimming babies. The catch is that the image changes to reflect the growing toxic pollution of the world’s water sources.
