6. Mark Hansen Is Back
Six years ago, the San Jose Museum of Art devoted an entire room to Mark Hansen’s and Ben Rubin’s astonishing Listening Post. A hanging scrim of miniature display screens was connected to computers that searched chat rooms and bulletin boards. Based on the artists’ algorithms, the computers would grab snippets of text from the web and project them in rolling waves of green text set to a minimalist soundtrack by Rubin. As Metro observed at the time: “In this flux of glowing type and intonation, the basic units—letters and words—of net traffic are turned into a kind of found poetry.”
